Position Summary:

The Medical Assistant will have personal interest and/or experience with foreign-born patients in a clinical setting, and will perform clinical and administrative tasks for both pediatric and adult patients under the direct supervision of a licensed physician and registered nurse.  All administrative functions will be evaluated by the Health Center Manager in collaboration with the Refugee Health Assessment Nurse.  Clinical functions will be evaluated by the Health Center Manager in collaboration with the supervising physician(s) for their respective clinics.  Bilingual in English and other languages preferred but not required.


As a member of the health center's integrated care team the Refugee Health Medical Assistant will fulfill the following KEY FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES towards the provision of patient centered, coordinated patient care:

  • Measure and record vital signs.
  • Utilize in-person or telephonic interpreters.
  • Record patient interview, history and chief complaint.
  • Provide patient education with regards to clinic policies, medications, management of diseases, home treatments and special diets.
  • Prepare patients for examination and perform routine screening tests.
  • Perform phlebotomy and collection of other lab specimens.
  • Perform basic lab tests, including rapid tests for HIV, and dipstick tests for pregnancy and urinalysis.
  • Perform EKGs.
  • Safely utilize cleaning solvents and related products.
  • Answer phones and schedule appointments.
  • Greet patients, complete registration forms, and provide instructions.
  • Maintain medical records utilizing an electronic medical record.
  • Enter information into a State of Maryland computer database.
  • Access health information on a national database.
  • Other duties as assigned.




  • Knowledge of sterile procedures.
  • Knowledge of common safety hazards and precautions.
  • Knowledge of supplies, equipment and maintaining quality control standards.
  • Knowledge of cleaning specifications of various medical equipment, fixtures, utensils and related materials.
  • Skill in developing and maintaining clinical quality assurance.
  • Skill in developing and resolving problems.
  • Skill in communicating with appropriate medical terminology.
  • Ability to foster a cooperative work environment.
  • Ability to monitor and/or maintain quality control standards.
  • Ability to maintain quality, safety, and infection control standards.
  • Knowledge of methods, procedures and protocols for the handling and disposal of hazardous biochemical waste products.
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws, regulations and guidelines for the disposal of hazardous waste.
  • Ability to use good reasoning and judgment and react calmly in emergency situations.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationship with patients, medical staff, coworkers, staff from other local organizations, and the public.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with patients from other cultures.
  • Skill in computer use, including data entry.
  • Skill in use of telephonic and in person interpreters.
  • Electronic Medical Record (EMR) experience preferred.




  • Work involves moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and /or loud noises.
  • Standing and /or walking for more than eight (8) hours per day.
  • Work environment involves exposure to potentially dangerous materials and situations that require following extensive safety precautions and may include the use of protective equipment. This includes exposure to blood born pathogens.
  • The employee will be working within a controlled enclosed environment daily.

The employee will be required to wear scrubs, hair covers, shoe covers and occasionally protective barrier clothing work hours. This can become uncomfortable in a warm, high humidity room. There is risk due to working within an environment with high temperature equipment, unpleasant odors, and noise of equipment in operation.
