Position Summary:

Operating in concert with and under the direction of a licensed physician, the physician assistant performs a broad range of medical services, including, but not limited to the following:

As a member of the health center's integrated care team the Physician Assistant will fulfill the following KEY FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES towards the provision of patient centered, coordinated patient care:

  • Take medical histories and order and interpret laboratory tests and x rays, and make diagnoses.
  • Record progress notes, instruct and counsel patients, and order proper therapy as needed.
  • Write or give verbal orders for any of the following:
    1. Labs
    2. General patient care measures, including diet, activity, intake & output, routine vital signs.
    3. Precautions such as Allergies and Isolation.
    4. Various preps such as required, i.e. NPO, enemas, etc.
    5. Symptomatic treatments including inhalation therapy, etc.
    6. Medications may be prescribed as provided in state and federal law,
  • The physician assistant may assist or initiate care in life- threatening emergency situations.
  • In the absence of the supervising physician, the physician assistant is responsible to the alternate supervising physician (s) as designated.

REQUIRED SKILLS OR ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of the state and federal laws pertaining to medicine
  • Must possess a valid license to practice in the State of Maryland.
  • Must have current certification from the National Commission on the Certification of Physician Assistants and all associated requirements for medical education, logging of class time, and retesting.
  • Must have a thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of medicine and allied services commensurate with his/her training.
  • Must be Board Certified.
  • Computer literacy required.
  • Knowledge/experience Electronic Medical Records (EMR) plus.
